BETTY WHO ?

Betty who you say. Yep that’s the hip name for artist  Jessica Anne Newham, known as Betty Who.  This Australian/Americian singer- songwriter and musician is set to be the next big female artist. Born 5th October 1991, Newham was born and raised in Sydney Australia. She moved to the United States in 2007 attending the Interlochen Center for Arts, just like Josh Groban. Newham has played the cello from 4 years old and is self-taught on  guitar and piano, writing her first songs at the age of 14. Studing at Berklee College of Music in Boston Newham was introduced to Peter Thomas who helped create the  dreamy, anthemic production style that fit her songs so well. Betty Who’s debut single, “Somebody Loves You,” gained notoriety through pop music blogger and at-the-time official Grammy blogger Arjan Writes in November 2012, quickly becoming a hit.

Betty Who’s debut EP, “The Movement,” gained more than 12,000 streams its first week online, and received rave reviews from critics and magazines.

“The Movement,” Ep features  four beautiful tracks with a distinctly bright vibe and exquisite pop textures. The EP includes, “Somebody Loves You” and “You’re In Love,” whose music videos that have gained 250,000 and 300,000 YouTube views, respectively.

After the release of “Movement” Who moved from Boston to New York, and has performed her first official live shows while continually writing new material.

“We also didn’t want to make people wait a year for more material,” Who states as her new EP is launched describing the songs as more “articulate” than the “Movement” tracks.

A lot of the songs were about being in love with somebody and not having them love you back, and learning from that. I think, because I’ve been so busy, I haven’t really been distracted by men and by my relationships as much as by work… There’s definitely heartbreak in the second EP, but it’s a little less consuming.” – Betty Who

From the first note of the song I was hooked. Betty Who offers a fresh yet old school 80s pop feel to her music, appearing bright and coulourful with a dance/ pop rich feel. Only getting started. I think we have a lot to see from Betty Who.

Phillip Phillips

Phillip LaDon Phillips, Jr. (born September 20, 1990) is an American singer-songwriter from Leesburg, Georgia. He won the eleventh season of American Idol on May 23, 2012. His song “Home”, released after his win, became the best selling of all winners songs. His debut album The World from the Side of the Moon was released on November 19, 2012. Phillips’ debut song, “Home”, was a incredible success with sales of the single passing over 4 million copies in the US alone!

The Vamps

The Vamps  are an up and coming Uk band. Recently signed to Mercury Records after enormous success on YouTube with nearly 2 million views. The band has no original content at present but an album is being recorded at the moment.  Their huge success comes from the bands clear musical talent both vocally and musically, playing drums, guitar and piano.   The covers and mash-ups on the Vamps YouTube channel are very good, and its clear to see the potential of the group.

The teenage band include lead singer Brad, drummer Tristan, guitarist James and new member as of this month bassist, Conor. The Vamps are Signed to Prestige band management. Check out these covers and more on their YouTube channel.

Miranda Lambert

 

Miranda Lambert is one of the hottest American female country music artists. Gaining fame after becoming a finalist in Nashville Star, she soon signed to Epic Records. Her first album Kerosene going platinum, by her third album Revolution, Lambert was topping the charts with the sensational, Grammy and ACM winner, ‘The house that built me’ and ‘Heart like mine’. Recently married to the huge country star Blake Shelton, they have become country’s golden couple.

While still in high school Lambert made her professional singing debut with her band, along with fronting a  house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom. Lambert’s childhood provided her with rich material for her music, when she turned fifteen, her family opened their home to an abused woman and her daughter, a theme portrayed in plenty of her songs about the treatment of women. Also  Miranda being from Texas regards the significance of guns in her songs as a measure of security and power linked to her past.

Miranda offers sentiment and heartfelt songs such as the house that built me, but has an entirely different side.

The other side of Miranda Lambert is a fiery, feisty woman, fearless and ready to fight. Her songs stand out from any other country style, with brash, direct and honest lyrics. ‘Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go’ 

 ‘Devil had a daughter Took him to deep water Tried to kill him with a kiss He said hey now honey What about the money I said I ain’t got time for this.’ Or the song. ‘time to get a gun’.

Lambert’s songs are abusive and hilarious, there’s nothing quite like Miranda Lambert. In ‘That’s the way the world goes round’ she writes, ‘Starts drinking heavy gets a big red nose And she beats her old man with her pantyhose’, epic songwriting and a must listen to…

 

5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer is an Australian pop rock band founded in 2011. The three friends from high school, started posting covers of songs on YouTube receiving over 600,000 views. They were joined by drummer Ashton and formed the current 5 Seconds of Summer band, along with Luke, Michael and Calum. With over 5 million views and counting, and a  huge social media following, the band is set for big things this year after signing with Sony records. Their international following exploded when One Directions Louis and Niall posted a link to their video.

5 Seconds of Summer released their first single Out Of My Limit on November 19, 2012,  receiving over 100,000 views the first day. The boys recent songwriting trip to London enabled them to work with McFly, Nick Hodgson (kaiser Chiefs) and James Bourne (Busted) to name a few. Last month the band began a worldwide tour supporting One Direction.

The bands influences include the likes of Blink 182, Ed Sheeran and Boys like Girls. They sound quite similar to bands like All Time Low, but their lyrics have more depth and meaning, and the band can offer more diversity in terms of pop rock style. I think this band is only getting started and we can expect great things from them in the future.

Yes! It is his real name….     and his was born to Record.

London born singer/songwriter Josh Record has just released his debut record – Bones.  The four song EP includes “For your Love”, “Wonder”, “Alaska” and “Bones”. This 24 year old has been gigging across London and supported artists on tour across Europe.

Attending the Brit School for Performing Arts which produced acts such as Adele and Amy Winehouse, its clear to see the potential of this young new artist. Josh is also passionate about helping young people and runs a music and film studio on one of Europe’s biggest estates, as well as supporting projects to Kenya.

The best kept secret, but not for long.

Josh Record compiles slow rhythmic melodies to create a dreamlike acoustic sound. He can also be compared with artists such as Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Joshua Radin  or Jack Johnson (some of my other favourites). Josh creates an optimisitc undertone throughout his lyrics and composition, making songs with melodies which grab at your heart strings and provoke raw emotions.
